• The Alsek river flows from Lowell Glacier and Lowell Lake through Kluane National Park, Yukon Territory, Canada.

Lowell Glacier is approximately 70 km long and averages 5 km wide. The glacier terminates at 600 m elevation in Lowell Lake, about 60 km southwest of Haines Junction, Yukon. The Alsek River flows into Lowell Lake from the north and exits the south end of the lake.

 • The Colorado River is so many things to so many people. Its course and its waters support population growth, represent economic security, and offer recreational opportunity. It transfroms from Highland Lakes, to the Austin waterfront, to the irrigation canals of rice country, and the marshes of Matagorda Bay. Water--this Colorado River--brings life, and money, and people to the landscape. And, it is our part of nature.

It was the first automobile road to penetrate the interior of the park. The road linked the east side of the park near Estes Park with Grand Lake on the west side. Work began in 1913 and was completed between 1918 and 1920. The narrow road was partly replaced by Trail Ridge Road in 1932, which incorporated sections of the Fall River Road.

 • An underground forest is revealed by low levels in the Highland Lakes, the system of reservoirs created by six dams operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The summer of 2006 will be a tough one for the River Authority who will have to balance the needs of irrigation and recreation with the demands of an ever growing population--and then there are the needs of the environment.

 • Longhorn Dam, at the base of Town Lake, must be opened to accomodate any inflow from Lake Austin, which simultaneously has inflow from Lake Travis. As a consequence, some people--or at least their cars--fall victim to muddy riverbeds.
